Serial dzieje się współcześnie w USA w enigmatycznym mieście Springfield (nazwę tę wybrano, gdyż w USA jest 121 miast o tej nazwie). Opowiada o robotniczej rodzinie: głowa domu Homer pracuje w elektrowni jądrowej, jego żona Marge jest gospodynią domową, dzieci to 10-letni Bart półdiable, 8-letnia Lisa genialne dziecko i niemowlę Maggie. Simpsonowie ukazują cynizm i tragikomedię życia. Oto inteligentne i wykształcone kobiety skazane są niemal na rolę gospodyń domowych, a mężczyźni, którzy marzą tylko o siedzeniu w barze i popijaniu piwa, muszą pracować, co zresztą robią udając żeby oszukać szefa.
Simpsonowie mieszkają w domku na przedmieściu, nie mają wiele pieniędzy, za to wiele wspaniałych szans w życiu, które udaje im się zawsze zmarnować. Jest to satyra z amerykańskiego mitu „Biedak milionerem”. Simpsonowie marnują każdą szansę, albo przez swoją głupotę, albo niszczy je ktoś zazdrosny. Ale na koniec nie mają do nikogo żalu bo powracają na stare śmieci do swego zwykłego życia, które w gruncie rzeczy najlepiej im odpowiada.
